Island Securities Ltd. (ISL) is a prominent brokerage firm in
Bangladesh, with a rich history dating back to the inception of the Chittagong
Stock Exchange (CSE).
Founding and Early Years
ISL commenced operations on October 10, 1995, aligning with the
inaugural trading day of the CSE. The company was founded by Mr. Mohammed
Mohiuddin, FCMA, a distinguished pioneer in the country's financial sector. Mr.
Mohiuddin played a key role as a sponsor and founding board member of the CSE.
Since 1972, he has served the ICMAB in various capacity both regional
and national level, including three terms as Vice President and ultimately as
President in 1995. His professional background also includes senior management
roles such as Audit Manager and Purchasing Manager at Glaxo Bangladesh Ltd.
(now GlaxoSmithKline), and Deputy Managing Director of the Azim Group.
ISL was registered as a Private Limited Company on 10 January 1996,
with an initial paid-up capital of Tk. 2.5 million. Over the years, the
company's capital base has grown significantly, reaching Tk. 299 million.
Expansion and Services
In June 2008, ISL expanded its operations by acquiring membership of
the Dhaka Stock Exchange Ltd. (Membership No. 106), thereby extending its
brokerage services to a broader clientele. The company offers a comprehensive
range of services, including brokerage and dealership, and has embraced
technological advancements to meet evolving client expectations.
In June 2024, ISL launched an Online Management System (OMS) to
facilitate efficient and paperless transactions, enhancing convenience and
operational efficiency.
ISL is a pioneer among brokerage houses, having opened its first
branch — Sha Amanath Branch in Chattogram — in 2009. Today, ISL operates 34
branches and digital booths across major district and sub-district including
Dhaka, Chattogram, Noakhali, Khulna, Sylhet, Barishal, Rajshahi, and
Mymensingh.
ISL holds stock broker, dealer, and CDBL full Depository Participant
(DP) licenses, underscoring its robust infrastructure and commitment to
comprehensive capital market services.
ISL’s greatest asset is its team of 180 manpower—all of whom began their careers at ISL with no prior experience. These employees receive robust, hands-on training in both theoretical and practical aspects of capital market operations. This comprehensive development framework enables staff to excel, often preparing them to take on high-level roles. Many ISL alumni have gone on to senior positions at other organizations. Mr. Mohammed Mohiuddin FCMA, Chairman of Island Securities Limited, was born in an off-shore Island “HATIYA” under the district of Noakhali on 2nd August 1946. He is the son of Late Moulobi Monabbar Uddin and Late Mymuna Khatun. Mr. Mohammed Mohiuddin FCMA did his honours in Commerce and Masters in Accounting from Dhaka University in the year 1967 and 1968 respectively. He took his professional degree in Cost and Management Accounting in 1971 from Pakistan Institute of Industrial Accountants. He has been elected as fellow of ICMAB in 1979. Mr. Mohiuddin had been associated with ICMAB as Branch Council Secretary, Branch Council Chairman and Member National Council for three terms (1979-1989). Prior to his election as President of the National Council of ICMAB he was Vice-President for the year 1993-1994. He was one of our successful instructors of Chittagong Centre (1972-1987). Mr. Mohiuddin has wide range of multidisciplinary experience over long 55 years. While working for Glaxo Bangladesh Ltd. (1970-1987) he had held the post of Cost Supervisor (1970-1972), Cost Accounts Officer (1972-1975), Sr. Accounts Officer (1975-1979), Audit Manager (1979-1981), Purchasing Manager (1981-1987). He also worked for a short period at Beximco Group as Finance Manager of their construction company, Soiltech International Ltd. In late 1988 Mr. Mohiuddin joined Azim Group, a renowned Garment Manufacturer and Exporter, as General Manager. Worked at their Sweater Factory, Global Knit-Wear Limited (1988-1990). Since January 1991 he has been working as Executive Director (Finance & Administration) of the same group. He retired from Azim Group in June 2005 and joined family business. Currently he is working as the Chairman of Island Securities Ltd and BLP Warm Fashion Ltd. Mr. Mohiuddin presented many papers at different ICMA Seminars, SAFA Seminars, contributed many articles which were published in our journal. He also represented ICMAB in CAPA Conference, Australia, SAFA Conference in Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Mr. Mohiuddin is an active member of various social organizations. He was District Chairman in the district cabinet of Lions Club International 315-B2, Bangladesh. He was President of Lions Club of Chittagong Progressive. Mr. Mohiuddin is the author of capital market related two books one is “Share Bajar Jiggasha” – a best-selling book that addresses common questions and provides valuable insights into the capital market. And another is “Pujibazar Bisleson” – a comprehensive guide focused on capital market analysis. Mr. Mohiuddin has dedicated himself to improve the quality of Industrial Management in Bangladesh. He is currently serving as the Managing Director of BLP Warm Fashion Ltd, one of the prominent garment export companies in Bangladesh, and also holds the positions of Managing Director at Island Securities Ltd and Director & CEO of Atex Associates Ltd.
